Commitment
By Chuck Thomas

The fire in his eyes was hard to ignore and it immediately drew me in.  I remember thinking, wow, what a great smile but man, he’s so young.  It wasn’t long into our conversation that I recognized that behind his humble, kind and caring demeanor stirred fear, hurt and someone who’d been knocked around his entire life. He told me about the mundane jobs he’d worked and about a history of disappointment, despair and poverty.   He was ready for a change he said, and I believed him, because behind his timid voice I saw something I don’t see very often in his age group: determination and commitment.

After a rigorous recruiting process and an intense training program that I was conducting at one of the area’s leading automobile dealerships, he made it through and graduated the course, even though I’m sure he wanted to quit many times.  Unfortunately, the auto dealer decided not to take on this man -- not because they didn’t see the potential in him, and not because he didn’t have drive beyond anyone twice or three times his age.  The true desire and passion to make himself successful was in him, he just got “it.”  The only person standing in between him and success was himself.

He went on to face many hurdles, chasing the success he was driven towards, and through constant communication with me and 14 interviews later, he was finally able to secure a position at a thriving dealership that believed in him as much as I did, but more importantly, as much as he did.  I was informed today that through his dedication and commitment to realize his dreams, he sold his first car.

I talk about commitment every day to many recruits young and old.  But this man’s story illustrates the true meaning of commitment. And that is, this 19-year-old young man from Missouri never, never, NEVER gave up on his dream to change his life. I ask you: who do you want to be and what are you willing to do to get there? Are you truly committed?  I am and so is he.
